Abiogenesis takes another step forward.....
by snare&racket inspark of life: metabolism appears in lab without cells19:42 25 april 2014 by linda geddesfor similar stories, visit the evolution and human evolution topic guidesmetabolic processes that underpin life on earth have arisen spontaneously outside of cells.
the serendipitous finding that metabolism the cascade of reactions in all cells that provides them with the raw materials they need to survive can happen in such simple conditions provides fresh insights into how the first life formed.
it also suggests that the complex processes needed for life may have surprisingly humble origins.. "people have said that these pathways look so complex they couldn't form by environmental chemistry alone," says markus ralser at the university of cambridge who supervised the research.. but his findings suggest that many of these reactions could have occurred spontaneously in earth's early oceans, catalysed by metal ions rather than the enzymes that drive them in cells today.. the origin of metabolism is a major gap in our understanding of theemergence of life.

DF'ed and Confused...
by Stumbeline inso i think the title pretty much says it all.
i have a tendancy to be long winded about things, so i'll just give a general introduction and maybe tell things as i go along.
i don't even really know what i want from this site (ironically i remember jehovahs-witness.net mentioned from the platform as a site not to go to).

Upcoming Surgery and Blood
by HeyThere ini am a newly unbaptised publisher.
recently i found out i need to have major surgery and the jw's tried to rush a blood card in my hand.
i was so relieved when the elders said i could not have one until i was baptised.. but they rushed to get me copies of the blood videos.

Hi, I missed this thread when you posted it. Happy to read that you are home recovering well and woke up to TTATT, before you got baptized.
I recently had a "worldly" friend ask me if I wanted all my videos about the blood doctrine back, as she was curious a couple years ago (when I was still in and witnessing) about the JW's and the blood doctrine. She wanted to see the medical evidence for it as she had wondered how safe transfusions were. She's someone I confided in when I decided to quickly fade so we shared a good laugh when I told her to toss those videos and make sure no on else could see them :)

Ronald Aronson book
by Gypsy Sam ini'm reading his book, "living without god" ~ new directions for atheists, agnostics, secularists, and the undecided.
it was written in 2008 and is a logical, thought provoking, smooth read.. i am a bit more than half finished and didn't see any other threads on this book.
i'm really enjoying it and would recommend it for anyone.. has anyone else read it?

Kate, that amazon descriptions sounds perfect. To me, he just seems to use logic and isn't condescending. As I see more workmates cling so fiercely to their faith and look Down on those that don't practice, I worry about where we are headed in the U.S. Religious extremism is an issue and it's contributing to more black and white thinking, us vs. them mentality, which is not a solution. Secular humanism just makes so much sense to me
Phizzy, my screen name is just for fun. I enjoy reading about gypsies and their culture always intrigued me. Another great book, based on his life, is Gypsy Boy, by Mikey Walsh. It reminded me of the closed mind mentality of the witnesses. This was a boy that never fit in with his family and his dad tried to force him to be someone he wasn't. Gypsy culture is closed off from society and it's interesting to compare what this can do to people born into it that don't fit the bubble.

No.
The minute I realized Satan wasn't real, I asked myself how could I continue thinking god was real. To me, they are a package deal.

The Invention of Lying
by AllTimeJeff ini just watched this movie on video this weekend.
always meant to see it and just got around to it.
it was a brilliant movie, but not at all what i was expecting.. it's a story of a man who lives in a world where everyone says what is on their mind all the time, to the point of brutal honesty (no, i am not sleeping with you.").

Watched this for the first time last night with my teenager. Really had some points I was debating posting on Facebook Since I still have JW's on my page.
It's amazing how your worldview can change after a year of questioning and reading books you previously never would gave glanced through.
